Curriculum Coverage and Assessment

When we devised the curriculum for our school we wanted to take full advantage of our unique circumstances as a school, both based in a military station and on the historic island of Cyprus.   Therefore, when we decided on our themes we embraced the physical, cultural and historical resources available to us, in order to enhance the learning opportunities for our pupils and deliver a curriculum which motivates and engages all of our children.  Our curriculum is underpinned by Service Children’s Education statement – ‘The child in our schools’ which can be seen below.

The curriculum is based on a two year rolling programme, cycle A and cycle B, which means that pupils in mixed age classes do not revisit the same theme within their Key Stage.  Key Stage 2 is divided into Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) and Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 and 6).  The themes are covered over a whole term in both Key Stages 1 and 2. Where relevant the themes are cross curricular, for example: In Lower Key Stage 2 one of our themes is 'The Romans' and this includes the Geography unit on a European Country (Italy), Design Technology food topic of 'Preparing a Roman feast’ and a PE topic on military fitness in the Roman army as well as a dance unit based on ‘Gladiators’!   When there is no natural link between the theme and units within subjects they are taught discreetly, so for example in the above theme of 'The Romans' the Science unit titled 'Animals including Humans' is taught as ‘stand alone’ lessons which are not linked to the theme.

In the document titled 'DPS Overview of Topic' document below you will be able to see the long term planning of the 2 year cycles across the Key Stages which ensures that our curriculum is both broad and balanced and that appropriate continuity and progression in our pupils' learning is developed across their school career.  The other documents then show the more detailed medium term planning of the individual themes including the learning objectives for that term.  These form the basis of the teachers’ individual lesson plans which are then specifically tailored to meet the needs of all pupils’ within their class.

At Dhekelia Primary school we believe that assessment is integral to high quality teaching and learning. It helps us to ensure that our teaching is appropriate and that learners are making at least expected progress. In light of this we have, alongside our colleagues in the three other SCE primary schools in Cyprus, devised our own set of assessment principles which can be found on the link below. These outline our approach, method and use of assessment within our schools.
